I make things largely from what the wood tells me it should be. The slab this chair is made from sat in my shop for at least 4 years where I could see it so That I might figure out what it was supposed to be. The wood itself came from a ‘long time dead’ and rotting Red Oak I found laying in the woods. I cut two logs from it and dragged one home. It weighed about 3,000 pounds and nearly broke my little machine. After milling off the rotten outsides I found very nice wood inside and made several items from in, including tables. This slab had a ‘cup’ in it, and yes, I could have planed that out at anytime I was doing other work, but something told me to hold off and think some more. Eventually I came to realize that the ‘cup’ lent itself perfectly to a seat and back for a chair. This is a unique and extremely sturdy chair using a reverse waterfall joint with a mitered blind spline. Legs use a blind tenon joint. Material is Red Oak for the seat and back, and Maple for the legs. The sides are live edges. The finish is simple Tung oil, 4 coats. Would work well as an accent chair or other purpose. This finish can be altered to suit a client’s needs.
